Montreal World Film Festival Screening of "Peau d'ange"
Article by Sarah Beaufol, Commeau Cinema

Like you I awaited this film, Peau d'ange impatiently. Like you, I dreamed of a first strong and sensitive, original and single work with an image by its director. Unfortunately, the dream was short. Peau d'ange is a first attempt, but not a master stroke. Admittedly, certain passages seem touched by grace. Furtive moments stolen with a handheld camera manage to move us and to make us dream. You begin to hope that this lasts. But these moments are rare, and do not succeed in the remainder of the film. You regret that Peau d'ange lacks cohesion. The story becomes lost and is stretched in all directions instead of being centered on the paramount relationships of the principal characters. It's as if its author, pressed by time limitations before filming began, had wanted to say too many things at the same time. A youthful discretion!

Therefore, all these beautiful feelings, these fine words, do not come to fruition. However, the actors inspire a real tenderness, in particular the young and tender Morgane More, but also Karine Sylla, the splendid co-screenwriter and wife of the director.

Guillaume Depardieu is faithful to himself, gross from crude, damaged, hard, true. In short, nothing negative about casting, in spite of a large vacuum in the final result. But hope is not lost. One waits and hopes that Perez's next directorial project will bear fruit leaving room for true emotion. In any case, I promise I will be there.
